How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship & Musical Theater

How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship & Musical Theater
by Marc Acito
Order this Book

A deliciously funny romp of a novel about one overly theatrical (and sexually confused) New Jersey teenager's larcenous quest for his acting school tuition. It's 1983 in Wallingford, New Jersey, a sleepy bedroom community outside of Manhattan. Seventeen-year-old Edward Zanni, a feckless Ferris Bueller–type, is Peter Panning his way through a carefree summer of magic and mischief. The fun comes to a halt, however, when Edward's father remarries and refuses to pay for Edward to study acting at Juilliard. Edward's truly in a bind.

He's ineligible for scholarships because his father earns too much. He's unable to contact his mother because she's somewhere in Peru trying to commune with Incan spirits. And, as a sure sign he's destined for a life in the arts, Edward's incapable of holding down a job. So he turns to his loyal (but immoral) misfit friends to help him steal the tuition money from his father, all the while practicing for his high school performance of Grease. Disguising themselves as nuns and priests, they merrily scheme their way through embezzlement, money laundering, identity theft, forgery, and blackmail. But, along the way, Edward also learns the value of friendship, hard work, and how you're not really a man until you can beat up your father — metaphorically, that is.

How I Paid for College is a farcical coming-of-age story that's kind of like what would ensue if David Sedaris rewrote The Catcher in the Rye. It is a novel for anyone who has ever had a dream or a scheme, and it marks the introduction to an original and audacious talent.

In and Out of the Closet Christian Lesbian Shares Her Struggle with Her Sexuality in Memoir

Columbus, Ohio _ In the past few months, hundreds of same-sex couples have tied the knot in a whirlwind of legal and social revolution. The moral and legal debate still looms in churches, courthouses and legislative chambers. Gail Dickert adds to this debate with her new memoir, Coming Out of the Closet without Coming Apart at the Seams (now available through AuthorHouse), which provides an inside look at the real life of a Christian lesbian.

Dickert takes readers through her journey down the road to self and social acceptance as she pops in and out of the closet. Raised in a small Pennsylvania town, Gail left promptly after turning 18, ending up in Cincinnati. Religion and faith were always a strong part of her life, and a year in Las Vegas working as a youth ministry intern changed her life forever.

Her religious teaching conflicted with the desires she felt inside. She eventually graduated from Cincinnati Bible College still trying to deal with her sexuality by believing in change. She began to slowly come out of the closet, and then receded. She attended gay transformation counseling, hoping to shake the feelings she had for other women. Instead, she met and fell in love with a woman in her ex-gay group, finally emerging from the closet a strong, proud Christian lesbian.

Coming Out of the Closet without Coming Apart at the Seams gives readers a rare glimpse inside the life of a Christian lesbian. Her journal-like writing style places readers next to her, as she endures tragedy and inner turmoil on her journey. Included are her astute, progressive and inclusive readings of certain biblical texts that have traditionally been used to condemn homosexuals.

Through heartbreaking and heartfelt experiences with losing friends and coming out to her family, Dickert was still able to maintain her faith even as the church seemed to close its doors to her. Coming Out of the Closet without Coming Apart at the Seams is a deeply personal, intimate account of one woman_s struggle for acceptance and peace with herself and her faith.

Dickert lives in Columbus, Ohio and is engaged to the same woman she met in her _ex-gay ministry_ program. She currently works in a new local church as the co-pastor. Coming Out of the Closet without Coming Apart at the Seams is her first book. For more information, visit www.authorhouse.com

Beyond Shame: Reclaiming the Abandoned History of Radical Gay Sexuality

Beyond Shame: Reclaiming the Abandoned History of Radical Gay Sexuality
by Patrick Moore
Pre-order this book today!
Foreword by Michael Bronski

A bold, unapologetic celebration of gay male sexual culture in the 1970s The radical sexuality of gay American men in the 1970s is often seen as a shameful period of excess that led to the AIDS crisis. Beyond Shame claims that when the gay community divorced itself from this allegedly tainted legacy, the tragic result was an intergenerational disconnect because the original participants were unable to pass on a sense of pride and identity to younger generations. Indeed, one reason for the current rise in HIV, Moore argues, is precisely due to this destructive occurrence, which increased the willingness of younger gay men to engage in unsafe sex.

Lifting the "veil of AIDS," Moore recasts the gay male sexual culture of the 1970s as both groundbreaking and creative--provocatively comparing extreme sex to art. He presents a powerful yet nuanced snapshot of a maligned, forgotten era. Moore rescues gay America"s past, present, and future from a disturbing spiral of destruction and AIDS-related shame, illustrating why it"s critical for the gay community to reclaim the decade. As founding director of the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS, Patrick Moore pioneered the concept of preserving artworks as historical artifacts of the AIDS crisis. He has worked extensively in gay/lesbian civil rights and AIDS activism and is the author of two novels, This Every Night and Iowa. Moore lives in Los Angeles.

"As a detailed examination of the ways in which rage gives depth to art, Moore"s book has no peer in recent memory."--Publishers Weekly

"Moore"s point of departure is as refreshing as it is daring . . . calling gay men to return to the sexualvanguard."--Out

"Essential reading for anyone seeking an imaginative interpretation of recent gay history."--Library Journal

"A provocative, wistful book . . . Moore"s yearning is touching and his politics refreshingly incautious--a romantic affection for the entirely unromantic." --The Advocate

Sanctity and Male Desire: A Gay Reading of Saints

Sanctity and Male Desire: A Gay Reading of Saints
By Donald L Boisvert
Order this book

"Human desire is a path to spiritual wholeness," says author Donald Boisvert, in this unusual look at how saints--and one's devotion to them--can be sites for the confirmation and celebration of homoerotic desire. The author comes to the topic as a gay scholar of religion and draws upon his own experience of saints including his years in seminary beginning at age 13. Saints can inspire desire and, through eclectic readings of their lives and imagery, the author suggests meanings and strategies attached to the emergence of same-sex attraction. The book contains 12 chapters that focus on saints, including: Michael the Archangel; Sebastian and Tarcisius; John the Baptist; Joseph; Paul and Augustine; the Ugandan and North American martyrs; Francis of Assisi; Dominic Savio and other boy saints; Damien and the missionary saints; Peter Julian Eymard and the Eucharist; and gay saints.

Just Married: Gay Marriage and the Expansion of Human Rights
(Living Out: Gay and Lesbian Autobiographies) by Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell
Order this Book

Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell made international news headlines and human rights history in January 2001 when they became the first gay couple anywhere in the world to be issued a government marriage certificate. The marriage would not become fully legal, however, until the Ontario provincial government registered the marriage, and it refused to do so. Bourassa, Varnell, and their church have brought a lawsuit asking for legal registration, but the case is still in the courts. Just Married is an account by Bourassa and Varnell of how their church, the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, decided to test the Canadian marriage laws, and how they and a lesbian couple agreed to be the ones to make the attempt. Under the Ontario Marriage Act, any adult couple can be granted a marriage license if a church, following ancient tradition, reads the marriage banns on the three Sundays prior to the wedding. Joe and Kevin had long wished to be legally married in their church. They expected controversy, but little expected the massive scale of the international coverage that occurred, as reporting on their intentions and their wedding of them shot across the Internet and their photographs appeared in newspapers not only across North America but also in Europe, Asia, and South America. Despite the legal and political wrangling, the opposition and support they received, the disputes among religious denominations and organizations, and the glare of the media lights, this remains a story of two people who chose to make a life together and sought the support of both church and state for their marriage. They believe they have taken part in an incredible event?one that will change the world, not just for Canadians, but for citizens, families, and communities everywhere.
